Joe

Washington County Sheriff's Department K9

In 2007 the Washington County Sheriff’s Department “hired” Joe as its K9.  Joe is 2 ½ years old yellow Lab/mix and is partnered with Deputy Jason Schlabaugh.  Joe was originally located in an Animal Rescue League shelter in Kansas.  He was moved to another shelter in Nebraska and was reaching the point where he would have to be destroyed.  Shelter staff recognized working traits in Joe and contacted a police dog training and consulting firm.   Joe was accepted into their program went through five (5) weeks of professional training as a narcotic detection dog.

Joe began his local training with his new partner by riding along during routine patrol.  He regularly works on retrieval drills and other exercises.  Joe has added tracking and trailing to his narcotics detection abilities. He continues to improve his skills and receive professional training.

The majority of funds needed to procure, train, and equip Joe have come from donations.  He has a bullet proof vest that was funded through a grant. His veterinary care has been donated by Dr. Terry Palmer of Quad County Veterinary Care of Wellman. His dog food has been provided by Wellman Produce Company.  If you or your organization would like to contribute to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department K9 unit, please call Sheriff Jerry A. Dunbar, Chief Deputy Dennler, Karla, or Toni at 653-2107 or email wpsweb@co.washington.ia.us .
