Web/Information Services

In July of 2000 Sgt. Tim Smit was assigned duties as Washington Public Safety Information Technology Administrator. His duties include administering/maintaining the Public Safety Computer System, training, web design, forensic computer examinations, and grant writing.

Washington County began a countywide government Internet access project late in the summer of 1999.  Their main web site at http://co.washington.ia.us went on line early in the project with other departments following later.  The project has given the public access to county web sites and e-mail addresses.  Other web-based services are planned for the future.

As part of the project, the Washington County Public Safety Center received high-speed Internet access along with e-mail and web hosting ability. A Hewlett Packard LPR server was installed to host e-mail and Internet web sites.

In October of 2000 the Public Safety Center server area was overhauled. Computer and other equipment had had been added over time to this area during various projects. Network and phone cabling were tangled and left exposed on the floor. It was time to rewire and consolidate equipment. The network servers, hubs, UPS and other equipment were moved to new enclosed racks and a new Hewlett Packard LH 3000 server added. Much of the phone and network wiring was relocated to enclosed channels.

........

The initial Public Safety web site contains information about the Sheriff’s Department, City of Washington Police Department, Sheriff’s Patrol, Civil Office, Records, Jail, Washington / Louisa Narcotics Task Force, and 911 dispatch.  All the different entities housed at the safety center contributed information and had a hand in creating the initial site. The web site was created using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004.

Please contact Sgt. Smit at timsmit@wps.co.washington.co.us if you have any questions or comments about the web site.
