The long awaited second phase of Communications Center equipment upgrade is now completed! These pictures show the work area for dispatchers.

This picture shows how part of the communications center looked prior to the upgrade. The main base station radios were from the 1970s and most of the console equipment had been installed in 1982. All the equipment has been in use continuously since it was installed.
Old Base Radio

Planning for the upgrade was started in 1997 and will be completed in several phases. The first phase, replacing the officer's car and portable radios along with a Wellman repeater was completed in 2000. The second phase includes replacing the Safety Center base station radios, consoles, electronics, and additional tower work. The second phase will also include repeating stations at Brighton and Crawfordsville.

A stand-alone building was installed near the main tower and will house radio equipment . Accumulated Ice often falls from the tower and the building is designed with this in mind. The building is the same type used by cellular companies.

All the radio, computer,911 and other equipment was moved to a temporary location in the Safety Center during the upgrade. All the old communications equipment was removed, carpet replaced and walls painted.
