TREE COMPENSATION
Washington County has developed the following tree compensation schedule in an effort to develop a rational basis to compensate for the loss of residential shade trees caused by the construction of roadway projects. This tree schedule is a hardwood tree schedule and applies only to residential trees.
TREE PAYMENT SCHEDULE
- Tree diameter measurements shall be taken at a point 18 inches above the base of the tree per Iowa DOT standard specifications.
- Hardwood trees such as oak, walnut, hard maple or ash, including pine and evergreen trees:

- Scrub, volunteer, split, topped, damaged, etc. trees: No compensation paid.
- Trees planted in, or trunk encroaching on, existing roadway easement area: No compensation paid.
- Compensation for softwood trees shall be at 1/3 the rate for hardwood trees.
- The landowner may salvage the tree for the log and/or firewood.
