The Washington County Engineer's Office received the “Best Concrete Overlay (>6 inches)” award during the awards banquet of the 46th Annual Concrete Paving Workshop held last Thursday in Des Moines for their 24 foot wide concrete overlay on Vine Avenue (W64). This award is given annually by the Iowa Concrete Paving Association and the Iowa Department of Transportation to recognize the best concrete paving work in the state.
This past summer, Washington County along with paving contractor Concrete Foundations Inc. of New Hampton, IA, completed a 4.0 mile concrete overlay project on Vine Avenue south of Highway 22 to 160 th Street in order to resurface the badly deteriorated asphalt pavement. Project engineer Jake Hotchkiss said, “As a result of the teamwork and cooperation by the contractor, residents and engineering staff, we were able to complete this project on time and with minimal interruption to everyone on the road.” The teamwork by everyone involved led to a quality and successful Washington County overlay project being chosen as the best out of thirteen other similar county projects across Iowa. Hotchkiss said, “It was an honor to be recognized as having the best project in the state of Iowa.”
The quality of the concrete overlay pavement and success of maintaining a good working relationship with the public were two of the reasons Washington County was honored with the award this year.
