PRESS RELEASE

BRIDGE ON G-38 OPEN FOR WINTER

December 23, 2010

The bridge crossing the west branch of Crooked Creek on County Highway G-38 just west of the City of Washington is reopened for traffic for the remainder of winter.  Construction will continue on the sides of and underneath the bridge during the winter.

The bridge was closed to traffic for reconstruction last summer.  An exceptionally wet summer and complications due to the proximity of the overhead railroad bridge have made construction more difficult than normal.

The contrator, Iowa Bridge and Culvert of Washington, went to extra lengths to in November to ensure the bridge could be opened for the remainder of winter when cold weather prevents many operations from being completed.  The contract, originally awarded for $737,436.76, is scheduled to be completed early next spring.  At that time, the road will be closed again for a short time to reconstruct the concrete approaches and guard rail.

Residents may contact the County Engineer's Office for additional information at (319) 653-7731.
