What process do I follow if I am building a new house?
Washington County does not have a zoning ordinance, therefore the County has only a few regulations. You will need to speak to the following persons:
- The County Environmental Health specialist regarding septic/sewer and well permits (319) 653-7782
- The Safety Center to obtain an E911 address (319) 653-2107
- The Secondary Roads Maintenance Foreman, (319) 653-1702 if you need a driveway entrance permit.
- If building within 2 miles of an incorporated town, you will need to call their city hall to inquire about the city's zoning and building requirements.
What are the setback requirements for Washington County?
Washington County does not have a required building setback. There are regulations regarding well setbacks and hog building setbacks covered by other agencies such as the Iowa DNR.
Washington County does not allow construction within the highway right-of-way. If you need assistance in locating the right-of-way near your property, please contact our office.
