Conservation Services ProvidedForestry ReserveThe Washington County Conservation Board is responsible for the inspection of Washington County timbers to determine if they qualify for exemption under Iowa's Forestry Reserve Law. Timbers of not less than 5 acres may be eligible for property tax exemption provided they meet certain requirements such as the exclusion livestock, they are not overharvested, and at least 200 trees grow on each acre (size is not a factor.) Tree Planting Equipment AvailableThe WCCB provides two three-point hitch mounted tree planters to area residents on a first-come, first-serve basis without charge. Two persons can generally plant approximately 200 trees per hour using this tool. Hand planting bars are also available for small plantings or hard to access areas. Hunter Safety CertificationThe WCCB sponsors hunter safety classes twice a year, generally in March and August/September. Hunter safety certification is required for anyone born after January 1, 1969 in order to obtain a hunting license. These classes are open to anyone 11 years of age or older. The certificate of completion, however, is not valid till the youth hunter's 12th birthday. Shooting RangeThe WCCB maintains a shooting range at Clemons Creek Wildlife and Recreation Area. The range offers 25, 50, and 100 yard ranges, a clay target range, and an archery range. All users must obtain a Shooting Range Certification by the WCCB Director, Park Ranger or Education Center Coordinator prior to using the range. For Range Certification and other services contact us by calling 319/657-2400 or e-mail wccb@iowatelcom.net.
