Basket Weaving:  Market Basket

Conservation Education Center, Marr Park

Saturday, Feb. 20    10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Material fee:  $12

 

Older students and adults will enjoy making this rectangular market basket with Jefferson County Naturalist Therese Cumminsky.  The basket will measure approximately 15” x 7” and will make a good gift, Easter basket, or decoration. 

 

Notes:  Bring lunch and old towel. Must be 6th grade or older. 

 


 

Nature CSI

Marr Park

Saturday, March 20    1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

 

Enjoy the first day of spring and set out to solve a mystery.  You’ll be a crime scene investigator set out to discover what happened.  We’ll do a mock “crime” scene inside and then use those skills we learned outdoors.  As we look with an eye for detail, the happenings at Marr Park will be revealed. 

 

 

 


 

Earth Day Scavenger Hunt: the 3Rs

Saturday, April 17    1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

 

Bring the whole family out to enjoy the beginning of spring and a celebration of the earth.  Follow clues to learn about reducing, reusing, and recycling.  Other fun activities in the Conservation Center will also engage your family.  Fun for all ages. 

 

 


 

Skunk River Canoe Trip

Meet at Brighton Boat Access

Saturday, May 8    10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Material fee:  $5

Age limit:  10 and up

 

We'll meet at the Brighton Boat Access first and carpool from there to the drop off site at McKains.  We'll enjoy a leisurely trip down the Skunk River through a large, scenic timber tract, stopping for a light lunch along the way.  No beginning canoeists, please.  Register at Washington Kirkwood, 319/653-4655.   

 

 


 

Youth Fishing Day

Marr Park

Saturday, June 5    8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

 

During this fun family event, students will learn about fish and fishing during short educational programs.  They will then try their skills during the fishing derby (youth only).  Afterwards, prizes will be given out and participants will have a chance to sample different types of game fish during a light lunch.  Donation suggestion. 

 

 


 

Little Dippers:  Pretty Patterns

Marr Park

Saturday, July 10   10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Age:  3 years old and under.  Must be accompanied by an adult. 

 

This fun program is for toddlers and an adult friend or relative.  This session will include a story, craft, games all about patterns adn shapes found in nature.  We'll also go on a hike to look for patterns of our own.  To register, contact Washington Kirkwood at 319/653-4655. 

 


 

Small Wonders:  Hop, Skip, and Jump

Saturday, July 24    10:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Age:  3-5 years.  Must be accompanied by an adult.

Stories in the Sky

Marr Park

Friday, August 13    8:00 – 9:00 p.m.

 

Gather around the campfire and listen to stories about the stars and other heavenly objects.  If the night is clear, we'll do some star-gazing and meteor shower watching.  Great for all ages.
